Alternative Literature's Effect on Student Understanding of Canonical Texts

Alternative literature can often aid comprehension of canonical texts. Throughout a unit on To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, I explored the impact of alternative text usage on students' understanding and enjoyment of Lee's novel. These aids and lesson plans consisted of things such as graphic novel excerpts, comic generator software like "Storyboard That," or graphic videos. Through collecting data such as students' homework and in class work, observations of individuals and group work, and conferences with individual students, I discerned threads or factors pertaining to the implementation of alternative literature.
