The Territory of McDonald: Secession in Twentieth Century Missouri

In 1961, a century after the American Civil War, Missouri witnessed its second secessionist movement. The creation of the Territory of McDonald saw the establishment of a short-lived independent government within McDonald county, the most southwestern county of Missouri. Although this movement ultimately failed, its existence reveals political and economic fissures within the state of Missouri during the mid-twentieth century. Our research analyzes the events and frustrations that afflicted McDonald county during the decade leading up to the creation of the Territory of McDonald, the course of the government’s life-span, and the years following its dissolvement. It will also explore how digital humanities can aid in making knowledge accessible to both researchers and the public at large, culminating in the creation of a website dedicated to displaying our findings. This poster presentation will display our key findings, the major events of the secessionist movement, and the format of our website.
