Relationship of Push-Ups to Bench Press Repetitions at Equivalent Weight in Athletes and Non-Athletes
The purpose of this study was to compare push-up (PU) repetitions to bench press (BP) repetitions performed at equivalent weights. College athletes (n =21) and non-athletes (n = 12) were measured for PU weight in the standard position. Each participant performed as many repetitions as possible without pause on each mode in random order. The two groups were not significantly different in height, weight, PU weight or percent of body weight used for BP repetitions (approximately 75.1 ± 3.5%). Athletes performed significantly more PU and BP repetitions (61 ± 12 and 30 ± 10, respectively) than non-athletes (42 ± 15 and 16 ± 13, respectively). The correlation between PU and BP repetitions was significantly higher in non-athletes (r = 0.90) than in athletes (r = 0.62). Despite the similarity in the pressing motion, both athletes and non-athletes perform more PU than BP repetitions at an equivalent weight.
