Comparison of Guardian and Teacher Report With EHS Screening Results

All children ages birth to 36 months in the Early Head Start (EHS) program are required to be screened for hearing and language. These screenings allow for children at risk for communication disorders to be enrolled in intervention as quickly as possible. Guardians and teachers are the most knowledgeable regarding the abilities of their children. A new guardian and teacher questionnaire was created and given to the caretaker and teacher, respectively, to be filled out prior to the screening appointment. The researcher compared the speech and language abilities reported by the surveys with the score of the ELM-2. The goal of this study was to see where the discrepancies were between the screening results and survey responses so that changes can be made to the screening process. This information will allow the Truman Speech and Hearing Clinic to improve the reliability of screenings administered to the EHS population.
