Reading Images: Using Linguistic Analysis of Comics to Improve Literacy

Sydney N. Ruffin
Dr. Heather Cianciola and Dr. John Quinn, Faculty Mentors

The use of linguistic analysis of comics needs to be furthered in order to understand how and why the intersectionality of text and images works in order to create a cohesive narrative. This knowledge can then be applied to setting guidelines for educators for leveling comics to use in an educational setting to aid in increasing literacy levels. I will perform a pragmatic linguistic analysis of a comic in order to gauge its’ linguistic characteristics. This will be done to find how each panel interacts with each other as well as the gaps between panels (called the “gutter” (McCloud, 1994)) to create an understandable narrative. Through understanding how comics work educators can better pick and even create graphic novels to improve literacy.
