Why Trust the Picaro?

Sarah Larson
Dr. David Partenheimer, Faculty Mentor

The Adventures of Simplicius Simplicissimus by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen and The Tin Drum by Günter Grass will be used to explore why the satirical telling of a tragedy like war can help the audience to understand that tragedy and why seeing the event through the eyes of a simpleton or someone residing in a mental hospital produces a more honest story than that told by a more traditional character. In the spirit of the literature and geography axis requirement for the English major, this will be related to geography through the Thirty Years' War and World War II in Germany by giving the facts of what happened and how those facts are altered or not to suit the story.
