Edouard Lalo (1823-1892), a French composer, completed this work in 1874 for violinist Pablo de Sarasate. The premiere was held in Paris, France in February of 1875. Symphonie Espagnole, which translates as "Spanish Symphony," is recognized as a violin concerto as opposed to an actual symphony. During this time, Spanish themes were very fashionable in musical works, which is reflected in this composition. Spanish motifs and flourishes are featured in the violin part through the use of rhythm and melody. This piece, along with Lalo's cello concerto, is one of his most frequently performed pieces and oftentimes considered a showpiece for the violin.
