Solving Life's Problems

There are rising concerns in the United States, and other parts of the world, that current levels of scientific literacy are inadequate for consensus. A lack of problem solving, an essential part of the scientific process, has led to disagreements on numerous issues including evolution, climate change, and vaccines. To address this problem, our research project uses 3D models as a tool for students to study transitional forms as a hands-on way to understand evolution. This project has three components: designing a lesson plan that meets Missouri Learning Standards, designing the models using CAD software, and testing the activity in a simulated classroom environment. The lesson will ask students to assemble 3D printed alien creatures in an evolutionarily consistent way, arrange them in order, and theorize about their relatedness. The project aspires to allow students to solve the problem of evolution themselves.
