The Impact of Parent Communication in the Classroom

Effective communication between families and educational institutions is necessary for the overall success of students. Research shows the more parents and teachers share relevant information with each other about a student and their needs, the better equipped both will be to help that student be successful inside and outside of the classroom. Using an interdisciplinary lens to review scholarly literature and analyze various forms of communication from a fifth-grade classroom in northeast Missouri, this study examines how different forms of parent communication impact effectiveness in the classroom. My findings argue positive parental communication and involvement have an incredibly important impact on a student’s success. While effective communication will look differently in each classroom as individual teachers adjust their styles to meet the needs of students and their families, the ultimate goal is to meet every family where they are and provide them with the tools they need to be successful.
