Oxidation of 5-Methylisatin for Synthesis of an Anticancer Drug

Alison R. Regina
Dr. Justine R. Olson, Faculty Mentor

Our research project aims to optimize the 2nd step in the synthesis of an anticancer drug candidate, which specifically targets the APOBEC3 protein. The APOBEC3 protein is typically found in hard-to-treat and late-stage cancers and overexpressed in metastases. 5-Methylisatin and ceric ammonium nitrate are being used to test potential reaction conditions before using the expensive and time-consuming-to-produce product of step 1. We believe we have found appropriate conditions for the oxidation of 5-methylisatin, and progress toward the characterization of the product via standard methods will be discussed.
