Determining the Ideal Conditions of a Ring Formation Step in the Synthesis of an Anti-Cancer Drug Targeting the APOBEC3 Protein

Elizabeth Thompson
Dr. Justine R. Olson, Faculty Mentor

The APOBEC3 protein is commonly found in late-stage and difficult-to-treat cancers. The Miller Research Lab (TSU) was able to use computational chemistry to discover a molecule (dubbed “wenwu”) with a strong binding affinity to APOBEC3, which could be useful in treating these cancers. Our lab is attempting to synthesize “wenwu” using a three-step synthesis that is both simple and uses inexpensive reagents. Evidence of the success of the last step, a ring formation between 2-guanidinobenzimidazole and an aldehyde-containing intermediate, will be described.
