The Effect of Interest on Comprehension in Guided Reading
This study examined the effect of interest on comprehension in guided reading. Third-grade students (N = 12) completed measures of reading comprehension and interest in January and February of the same year. Students comprehension and interest were measured from a teacher selected book and a students selected book. The researcher used an interest inventory to discover student’s interests and then selected three books that students then ranked. Students videoed themselves answering comprehension questions and then ranked their interest level. The researcher graded the reading comprehension videos using a rubric. Results from a paired t-test showed that comprehension increased although not from interest. Possible explanations for the increase in comprehension are presented.
