Effects of the Six Hats on Social Studies Comprehension

This study investigated how the differentiation strategy of the Six Hats impacted social studies comprehension to ensure a maximum use of time in the classroom during social studies. The differentiation strategy of the Six Hats allows students to look at a topic from six perspectives. Students will consider facts, emotions, benefits, and alternatives. Students will problem solve and judge topics. Through this project, student comprehension is defined as recalling information and answering higher level thinking questions from the respective six hats. Students from a small, rural elementary school participated in the research. Data were obtained through pretest, post tests and student journals. Descriptive statistics were used to find trends in the data. Students showed improvement from pre to posttest but showed more variety in answers when answering the journal questions pertaining to the six hats. All three assessments were scored on two levels, fact recall and critical thinking.
