The Impact of Religion on Physical Fitness, Activity and Values

Ashley Hofmann
Dr. Brian Ott, Faculty Mentor

This research examines the relationship between students’ religious identity, fitness practices, and health values. Data was collected through an online survey instrument and is based on responses from 184 Truman State University students. Identifying with a religion at the broadest level did not show significant results in the dependent variables which included use of the student recreation center and valuing health, healthy eating, and exercise. I demonstrate that denominational identity affects the frequency at which some students use the recreation center and how important healthy eating is to them. This research extends the literature on identity, physical fitness, and fitness attitudes. Understanding how cultural identity intersects with healthful activities offers an avenue for reaching and encouraging a broader base to engage in positive health activities.
