Gender Discrimination in the Workplace
Gender discrimination is an ever present issue among many societies all around the world. The United States is no exception. A wage gap, increased levels of sexual harassment towards women, and stereotyping are all ways in which women experience prejudice in the work environment. With our current wage gap, a woman makes approximately seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. Surveys show that roughly eighty percent of working women have experienced sexual harassment at least once within their workplace. These incidents can result in a myriad of negative effects both physically and mentally for the victim, including depression, PTSD, career jeopardization, and the perpetuation of currently existing stereotypes against females. This paper will draw from my own experiences as well as several articles to explore how the issue of gender discrimination within the workplace can negatively impact the lives of women all over the world.
