Lettres de Drancy Translation

Cassidy J. Colhour
Dr. Timothy Farley, Faculty Mentor

Due to the Nazi occupation of France and the Vichy regime’s complicity in the Holocaust, over 76,000 French Jews were sent to extermination camps during the Second World War. Many of them were sent to the Drancy internment camp near Paris before being deported to their final destinations where the great majority was killed. Lettres de Drancy (Éditions Tallandier, 2002), compiled by Antoine Sabbagh, is composed of letters by Drancy prisoners and their loved ones. My capstone consists of translating 20 of these letters from French to English. With the use of historical research, dictionaries, other resources, and the help of my mentor, I am giving these victims a voice in English so that others can know their story.
