Socioeconomic Status and Child Development

A major factor underpinning child development research is the impact of a child's socioeconomic status on their development. Middle and upper-class parents provide their children with experiences that support their development, experiences that might include, for example, private tutoring or a three-week educational trip to Europe. The cost makes such opportunities prohibitive for underprivileged children. It is a common belief that children who are able to participate in more elaborate experiences will grow up to be the most successful adults, and the children who are not able to will be at risk for developmental delays. This essay examines and evaluates the impact of socioeconomic status and the childhood opportunities it makes possible, on the physical, emotional, and cognitive development of children.
