Multimodal Literature’s Effect on English Language Arts Students

Today’s students encounter multiple modes of literature in their daily lives. They become masters of composing and interpreting this literature outside of the classroom through various platforms like social media. Oftentimes, the skills they hone are not utilized in the classroom. Students tend to view writing in the classroom as something they are incapable of because of this disconnect. Through this case study of a multimodal writing project, I examined ways to legitimize mediums of writing my students were already comfortable with. As my students worked through and reflected upon their projects, I found that their self-perceptions as writers evolved. I watched my students find their own voice, take risks, and demonstrate a stronger command of their writing skills due to their confidence.
