Measuring Student Engagement with Nonfiction Texts
Nonfiction and informational texts are increasingly being pushed as important elements in the secondary English classroom, as students most frequently interact with these genres in their daily lives. Teaching nonfiction texts in the classroom is crucial to help students improve both as members of their academic community and as contributing members in their larger society. This qualitative case study of a 9th-grade English class aims to find what types of nonfiction texts engage students with what teaching strategies. Multiple teaching strategies such as class discussions, worksheets, and group activities are analyzed with multiple text types such as articles, reviews, and documentaries in order to find the most engaging combinations.
