The Power of Music: Argentine Protests Under Dictator Jorge Rafael Videla
The oppression of the Argentine people during the rule of dictator Jorge Rafael Videla from 1976 to 1983 was highlighted by struggle and terror. While in office, Videla managed the infamous Dirty War from behind his desk with support from the military. My research investigates the impact that came from protesters and their use of music during this time. I will discuss the use of popular Argentine musical forms including Argentine punk band, Los Violadores, and international allies that included the Irish band U2. My presentation will demonstrate the impact that music and protest had on the resolution of human rights under a restrictive dictator.
