#Resilience: Effects of Social Media Belongingness and Social Connectedness on Resilience

Crystal Tracy* and Emily Schnarr
Dr. Katie Judd, Faculty Mentor

This research examined the effect of social media belongingness and social connectedness on resilience. Resilience has been shown to impact student well-being, academic persistence, and dropout rates (Hartley, 2010; 2011), and research suggests that social support and belongingness impact resilience (Ozbay, et al., 2007). A moderation analysis assessing the impact of social media belongingness (SMB) on the relationship between social connectedness (SC) and resilience was conducted. Additional correlational analyses were also conducted. Our findings showed significant correlations between resilience, social connectedness, social media belongingness. SC was positively correlated with resilience, while SMB was negatively correlated with resilience. This result suggests in-person SC is related to stronger resilience, while SMB is related to weaker resilience. These results add to our understanding of resilience and belongingness in the digital age, and they may help universities work with students to improve resilience and reduce dropout rates.
