My black is beautiful, right?
What happens when America’s melting pot runs over? What do we do when the ingredients in the pot begin to separate? Another question to be asked if the contents of the pot truly ever melted together. There hasn’t ever really been a time where persons of color could coexist in peace alongside their white peers. Persons of color have internalized the prejudices, discrimination, and overall racism by whites so much that we have begun to divide ourselves further. Whether it be into a hashtag or twitter accounts, we have taken our beautiful black skin and created a scale out of it. Intraracial racism developed soon after the abolishment of slavery as a way to uphold standards of beauty in society, get ahead in the workplace, and to benefit from or to inhibit privileges associated with varying skin tones. From the black communities to schools in Brazil to the women in Sri Lanka, China, and Pakistan, discrimination based on skin color runs rampant and runs deep.
