Explications of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Essays and Pervasiveness of White Supremacy
Racism is embedded into United States’ law and into our communities’ culture. This paper will explore the origins of organized supremacy. The paper will use primary and secondary sources starting from the Civil War to trace the history of white supremacy. Through close readings of sources, the paper should be able to explain the revival of white supremacy. First, it will look at Coates’ collection of essays entitled We Were Eight Years in Power. The essays describes the lasting culture of oppression post-abolotionism. Coates shows the injustices throughout history and connects them to experiences of oppression today. These injustices are uncomfortably similar to US present political culture that degrades a multi racial democracy. This paper will identify detrimental patterns of the nation that should be addressed and eradicated permanently. Governments need to support marginalized groups, including policies and laws that would empower them. This would prove that success of a marginalized group is determined by selective federalization.
