Music for Chamber Winds in the 21st Century

Chamber music for wind instruments has a tendency to group orchestral woodwinds or brass together within their families (with only the horn appearing in the literature frequently alongside either family). Along with this, more recently developed instruments, such as the saxophone and euphonium, and those that would be considered “auxiliary”, such as the bass clarinet and flugelhorn, tended to face exclusion from chamber instrumentations well into the 20th century. However, the growth and development of the wind band and its repertoire has increased the variety of proficient wind musicians from which a composer should feel encouraged to experiment with and select from for new chamber compositions. Glass of Royal Blue provides one example of the musical potential that lies within less conventional combinations of winds in a chamber setting.
