Measuring Light Pollution Using Light Sensors
In this talk we discuss effects of light pollution through quantitative measurements made using light sensors. Poorly designed light fixtures can lead to wasted electricity, increased carbon emissions, and can negatively impact human and animal behavior. We began our research by measuring light pollution in three different areas around Kirksville (rural, semi-rural, and city). We also measured light pollution in Flagstaff, Arizona at the Lowell Observatory (semi-rural). We quantify the amount of light pollution based on the geographic location and as a function of direction. Additionally, we are helping create awareness within the Kirksville community using the collected data.
