His or Hers? Reviewing Gender Roles and Social Norms

Gender roles have played a distinctive role in our society since the beginning of time. Gender roles are defined as being the behaviors of men and women that are considered socially appropriate. Dating all the way back to the beginning of time, men and women had specific tasks they were expected to do. These roles were previously deemed a normative and concrete part of society.  Time has molded and changed these roles: women have slowly gained more rights, and men have developed their proposed roles as times have progressed. Society has also become a bit more open to men and women sharing roles, with less emphasis on which person of the specific sex is actually doing the task. Roles continue to change even to this day, as men and women continue to switch the roles they were assumed to have.
