To Hookup or Not to Hookup: That is the Question

The practice of having sex outside of committed relationships, also known as hookup culture, has become more widely known due to media coverage (Drexler 2015; Taylor 2013; Dye 2011; Kerner 2013). One hundred seventy college student respondents completed surveys that examine the involvement in the hookup culture and the functionality of some of its aspects. Due to the homogeneity of the population and the small sample of male respondents, the only demographic indicators showing statistical significance is Greek life involvement. Those in the Greek system are more likely to participate in hookups than those involved in other on-campus groups. In addition, women are more likely to hookup with friends or acquaintances while men are more likely to hookup with acquaintances or strangers. Women are also more likely to take responsibility for the birth control methods being used during these encounters.
