Effect of Two Forms of Potentiation on Anaerobic Power Performance in Wrestlers

Andrew T. Still
Dr. Jerry Mayhew, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two forms of pre-participation potentiation (PPP) on anaerobic power performance in college wrestlers.  Twenty-one NCAA Division II college wrestlers performed a baseline familiarization test series on the Margaria-Kalamen stair run (M-K) power test and were divided into counter-balanced PPP groups for a cross-over design.  One week later, one group performed three sets of squats (SQ) with 85% of estimated 1RM, and the other group performed three 30-second cycle sprints (CY) on stationary cycles as PPP prior to executing the M-K test.  The following week, each group performed the oppose PPP treatment prior to executing the M-K test.  Repeated-measures ANOVA indicated that the CY produced significantly higher M-K power score than SQ.  In conclusion, a speed-specific PPP treatment produced greater facilitation in an explosive power than a strength PPP treatment.
