Applying Intertextuality to David Lynch’s Inland Empire

The paper utilizes the textual strategy mode of intertextuality as a means of better understanding the 2006 David Lynch film, Inland Empire. The film stars Laura Dern as a retired Hollywood actress returning to the big screen as the lead in a new film project called “On High in Blue Tomorrows.” Due to the lack of robust theatrical reception and home video release, Inland Empire has received little to no critical study. Plot elements from previous works by Lynch are employed to comprehend deeper messages within the film. Through this approach, the intertextual practice transforms into an intratextual one, providing insight into how Lynch values the role of the receiver as much as he does the producer.
