Kavalactone Isolation from Piper methysticum using Chromatography
Meagan E. Nowlan
Dr. Laura Fielden, Faculty Mentor

Ingestion of the plant, Piper methysticum, is suggested to cause lever nercrosis leading to transplants and/or death. In this study, we attempted to isolate each kavalactone to determine which one(s) were the cause of the liver damage. We isolated the kavalactones into small groups and further research will separate these groups into individuals to further test which is responsible for the liver damage.
