Web-Based Campus Navigation

Harrison K. Hughes
Dr. Kafi Rahman, Faculty Mentor

Navigating Truman State’s campus can be challenging, especially to those unfamiliar with the layout. University maps are useful, but interactive mapping applications offer the greatest service in this domain, providing features such as variable zoom and guided route displays. This project bridges the gap between the two by providing an interactive online map customized to Truman’s grounds. The application provides a comprehensive display of campus with greater detail than any current geospatial library. An optimal route generator created with the A* search algorithm provides the user with a guided route between any two campus locations upon request. While traditional online mapping is limited to external direction, this application provides the platform to continue navigation into specific indoor locations. Further research will allow for the campus-wide integration of this feature. New students and guests alike can traverse Truman’s campus with ease by interacting with this virtual guide to the University.
