Sydney D. Mattson
Dr. Katrina Schmerold and Dr. Nancy Daley-Moore, Faculty Mentors

Teaching is a stressful profession that is facing many challenges with retention. Evidence suggests that this is an issue especially for teachers in rural communities where extra stress is often present. Research shows, contributions to teacher stress include students’ disruptive behavior, loss of autonomy, lack of support from administration, long hours, and financial burden. But how does this affect the students? It has been found that even observing someone who is stressed can have effects on your mind and body. This research examines the impact of perceived teacher stress on the classroom environment and student learning outcomes in rural communities. For data collection, a survey was sent out to rural elementary school teachers asking about their perceptions of stress and how it affects their classroom environment and student learning outcomes. This study is important for fostering teacher well-being, promoting student achievement, and addressing research gaps in the field of education.
