Reconstructing Identity
Reconstructing Identity is a fiber arts-based project that examines being an immigrant for almost my entire life across different regions of the world. Immigration has caused me to be unsure as to how I construct my identity. In this body of work, I wrestle with questions regarding my place as an Arab woman in a Midwestern setting in contrast with the myth of the American West and the Western landscape. I piece together elements from landscapes of places where I have previously lived and currently live to engage with my insecurities regarding race, land, and what “home” means. This work uses Batik and Bojagi fiber processes that traditionally involve female-dominated chains of production. Using these processes allows me to engage in conversations about how gender interacts with topics of race, landscapes, and identity.
