Exploring College Students' Attitudes Toward People With Dementia

Lexus R. Luedtke
Dr. Amy Teten, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this study was to collect information regarding Truman State students’ perceptions towards people who have a diagnosis of dementia. The study sought to determine whether the amount of prior knowledge and experience with dementia patients would have an impact on their overall attitudes on the topic. Classes from various academic departments– Communication Disorders, Health Science, Nursing, Psychology, and Education– were invited to participate in the study. The students in these classes were presented with a survey containing questions regarding demographics followed by a 20-item questionnaire called The Dementia Attitudes Scale (O’Connor and McFadden, 2010). Data collection is still ongoing, but results will be made available by the time of the Student Research Conference.
