How Happiness in University Students is Affected by Academic Self-Concept and Academic Performance

Cas G. Schmidt
Dr. Amber Johnson, Faculty Mentor

This study looks at the connection between happiness, academic self-concept, and academic success in university students. While there have been previous studies that look at these variables, this is the first study to do so for university students in Missouri. A better understanding of how happiness, academic self-concept, and academic success interact can aid universities in their understanding of how to help students improve their happiness. This study analyzes a survey completed by 54 students at Truman State University. This study found that happiness and academic self-concept are positively correlated. It also found that those who participate in class often are happier than those that participate infrequently. There was no relationship found between happiness or academic self-concept and GPA. Gender was found to be completely independent of both happiness and academic self-concept. Further research with a larger sample could work on understanding more about happiness in students.
