Dr. Jerry L. Mayhew , Faculty Mentor

The aim of this study was to compare the 800-meter run times across high school freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors to identify significant performance differences between academic years.  Times for high school boys (n= 10,191) and girls (n= 7,799) 800-meter run from the spring 2025 season in Missouri were downloaded from the online Milesplit app. Times were recorded in centiseconds and converted to seconds for analysis.  Results of one-way ANOVA for males indicated that freshmen were significantly slower than any other year, while sophomores were significantly slower than seniors and juniors.  There was no significant difference between seniors and juniors. Results for one-way ANOVA for females indicated that freshmen were significantly slower than any other year, while sophomores and juniors were not significantly difference, and seniors were significantly faster than any other year.   Further research might focus on the longitudinal development of specific individuals in the 800m run.
