Exploration of Potential Interactions Between SA Signaling and Lipid Metabolism: Characterization of Two Putative SA-binding Proteins (pSABPs) Shaven 3(SHV3) and Shaven-Like 2(SVL2) in Plant Resistance

While defense mechanisms in plants have been studied for many years, they are still not fully understood. Jasmonic acid and salicylic acid (SA) are important signals for plant defense and immunity against insect and pathogenic attack, respectively. Two putative SA binding proteins (pSABPs), Shaven-3 (SHV3) and SHV3-like 2 (SVL2), have been identified and may play a role in plant defense. Both SHV3 and SVL2 are glycerophosphoryl diester phosphodiesterase-like (GPDLs) proteins that break down glycerophosphodiesters into glycerol-3-phosphate and an alcohol. To better understand the role of lipid metabolism in plant defense, SHV3, SVL2, and SVL1, another homolog of SHV3, were studied. Transcriptional analysis of the GPDLs in response to wounding and pathogen exposure was assessed using a promoter:GUS reporter system. Data show that these GPDLs appear to be involved in plant defense and response to injury.
