Two Ways To Stimulate Relevant Classroom Discussion
Stephanie M. Chrissotimos♦
Dr. Barbara Price, Faculty Mentor

This presentation represents the preliminary results of my MAE action research project over utilizing two different methods for stimulating relevant classroom discussion. The goal was to develop some understanding of which method better stimulates interactive discussion as well as what motivates students to participate in class discussion. The research was based on data from two junior English classes from a suburban high school in the Fall 2009 semester. Classes engaged in regular classroom discussion; however, two different methods of rewarding students for participation in class discussion were implemented in the study. I analyzed the results of both methods as affecting student participation in classroom discussion between the two classes. Data was kept on verbal participation (quantity and quality), prior background of participating in classroom discussion, and reflective responses after the conclusion of the study.
