A New Mode of Thinking: Application and Analysis of Eastern European and Middle Eastern Folk Music in Modern Jazz

The musics from Eastern Europe and the Middle East have long been an influence on many musical genres, from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts famous Rondo Alla Turca to The Rolling Stones Paint It Black. It has only been recently, however, that elements of these folk musics have been widely incorporated into the jazz genre. The use of asymmetrical meters, exotic modes, and particular ornamentation techniques are a few of the most notable and broad characteristics of these regions. The regional influences studied include the Balkans, Bulgaria/Turkey, Israel, and Lebanon. By transcribing folk influenced jazz music by artists such as Dave Douglas, Yuri Yunakov, Goran Ivanovic, Avishai Cohen, and Daniel Zamir I will delineate which characteristics are most prevalent in certain regions through melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and formal construction analysis.
