The purpose of this study was to assess the change in bench press strength resulting from resistance training with free weights and machine weights in low, medium, and high strength individuals. College women (n = 126) were selected for low, average, and high strength levels based on free weights (FW, n = 43) and seated horizontal press (SHP, n = 83). They trained specifically using each method 3 days/week for 12 weeks. Following training, the SHP group made a significantly greater gain (23%) than the FW group (12%). Low strength individuals made a significantly greater percent gain (24%) than did average (15%) and high (13%) strength individuals. The strength level x device interaction was not significant. Thus, percent upper body strength gains appear to be better using machine weights and in low-strength individuals.
