The Development of Inquiry-Based Environmental Activities for the Joseph Baldwin Academy Chemistry Course
Melissa A. Erlebacher
Dr. Dana Delaware, Faculty Mentor

Showing middle school students the excitement of studying science is a challenge that educators face today. Through hands-on investigative science activities, students have the opportunity to experience the stimulating field of environmental science. The objective of this research project is to adapt currently established water analyses to incorporate environmental investigation activities for the chemistry course at Joseph Baldwin Academy. Phosphate, sulfate, nitrite, and water hardness were selected as lab experiments for the potential inquiry-based experiments. Results from the modifications of these methods, including analysis of water from Red Barn Park and Swimming Pool Park, will be presented.
