She'll Cut You Deep: Examining Within-Group Violence Among African American Female College Students

This study examined ten African American female college students’ perceptions of and experiences with violence on college campus. The women participated in a 31 question interview, which was divided into five sections that included demographic information, environmental influence, experiences with violence on campus, Black women’s inter-group relations, and success. It was found that ten out of ten of the women witnessed verbal violence on their campus. Seven out of ten witnessed physical violence on their campus. Ten out of ten of the women were involved in verbal violence. Three out of ten were involved in a situation that was either physically violent or would have been physically violent had it not been for outside intervention. Competition, language, and age were found to be primary contributors to violence. Violence was found to be a salient issue in the lives of these women.
