The Extent and Distribution Level of Genetic Diversity Within and Among Rice Landrace Varieties from Vietnam

Allozyme data from eight rice landraces (Ozyra sativa L.) and three commercial varieties from Vietnam were analyzed to monitor the extent and distribution of genetic diversity within and among the varieties. Landrace samples were collected at different locations in Mekong Delta area while commercial samples were obtained from CLRRI. Twenty-two loci from seven enzymes were used to analyze the allozyme diversity. Landraces possessed a relatively high level of genetic diversity and heterozygosity. Commercial varieties showed a slightly higher level of genetic diversity than the landraces but a lower level of heterozygosity. These values are higher than those in previous studies of rice landraces from Vietnam because more polymorphic loci were used. Besides high levels of variation, landraces are genetically different from the commercial varieties (two commercial varieties showed low genetic similarity with landraces), which indicates that landraces need to be conserved as valuable resources for future commercial variety development.
