Renewable Energy Aid and Renewable Energy Consumption
This study examines whether renewable energy aid provided between 2013 and 2021 led to higher renewable energy consumption in 2022. Using available data for 49 countries, the results suggest that the aid itself does not have a statistically significant effect, while countries’ initial levels of renewable energy consumption remain the strongest predictor of current consumption. This highlights the role of path dependence: countries with an established renewable energy source or mechanisms continue to benefit from it. The findings suggest that policymakers and donors should focus on helping countries that are lagging in renewable energy adoption by supporting infrastructure development and capacity building.
