Life Skills Level 2 Program for Early Tobacco and Other Substance Use Prevention

Sarah Gillespie
Dr. Carol Cox, Faculty Mentor

Life skills training, educating youth in knowledge, attitudes, and skills for pro-social behavior, may be a promising option for reducing risk factors for tobacco use. A literature review reported some positive outcomes for life skills training programs on substance use, although study quality varied, and most programs focused on adolescents. Further examination of life skills training in childhood and on attitudes and behaviors to advance prevention knowledge was also suggested. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess elementary student participant attitudes towards tobacco use and self-reported level of social and resistance skills pre-post-Life Skills Level 2 training program. From student participant written pre-post-program questionnaire, changes in attitudes and skills will be presented.
