The Athletic Vocalist: How Can We Use Aerobic and Anaerobic Activity to Enhance Our Vocal Abilities
Over 200 muscles are involved in the vocal process, placing vocal pedagogy at the intersection of physiology and exercise science. This presentation explores how both aerobic and anaerobic exercise influence phonation, breath support, and vocal efficiency. Drawing from practical observations—such as the perceived ease of singing during movement—and existing research, I examine how targeted physical activity can enhance vocal endurance, delay fatigue, and improve breath control. Additionally, I address potential drawbacks of incorporating exercise into vocal practice and propose strategies to mitigate these effects. Ultimately, this discussion offers singers and educators practical tools for integrating physical training into vocal development.
