Retention and Recruitment for the Communication Department

Lydia F. Lamb*, Rachel Grigsby, Kathryn Hammock, Colleen O'Reilly, Pranavi G. Pitchyaiah, and Ali Werner
Dr. Michelle Kleine and Prof. Don Krause, Faculty Mentors

Over the past academic year, the students in the Applied Marketing course have been conducting research to improve the retention rate of current Communication department students at Truman State University, and innovate recruitment tactics to increase the overall number of Communication majors and minors. Fall 2023 was spent researching and creating a PR proposal for the Communication department. Following approval of said proposal, we have begun implementing our recruitment and retention tactics, which include a mentorship program, a Brightspace page and newsletter, restructuring department literature, and holding Zoom sessions with prospective students. This presentation will focus on the original research, as well as our tactics, how they were implemented, and the results we have seen so far.
