Text Painting in Franz Schubert's "Ganymed"
Eric R. Kooima♦
Dr. Warren Gooch, Faculty Mentor

Franz Schubert was a prolific early 19th century composer whose compositional style was characterized by the use of expressive texts, interesting harmonic progressions, and richly sonorous melody lines. His work, Ganymed, is an art song that is rich with instances of clever and beautiful text painting. Setting a Greek mythological poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Schubert carefully painted the ideas and feelings found in the text in the music he wrote. Symbolism is also evident in the text painting. The end result is a musical masterpiece in which the text and music share a tightly interwoven and cooperative relationship. This relationship highlights a myriad of textual ideas, and creates a composition that is highly emotive and expressive in nature. The presentation will include a performance of the piece.
