Wisdom and Gender in Ancient/Classical Greece
Allison K. Schlobohm
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

In Ancient/Classical Greece, women were often viewed as a burden upon the political and social system. Free men were the only people worthy of being a citizen. In direct contrast to this, however, was the role that female deities played within Greek mythology. Of particular interest is the role that the Greek goddess Athena played. My paper reviews the roles of women with in Greek society, the powers that Athena had within the Greek pantheon, and how the two contrast.
