The Effects of Gun Control Legislation on Gun-Related Death, Violence, and Crime

Calvin J. Colvis
Dr. Anton Daughters, Faculty Mentor

Considering the recent school shootings, the topic of gun control has been on many people’s minds. This research sought to find if a broad gun ban would decrease gun violence based on areas that implement heavy use of bans. The research was done using secondary data analysis. In addition, this research sought to find if there are any other solutions to decreasing gun deaths and violence, other than heavy bans. Based on FBI statistics, two patterns of results were identified. The first pattern showed a fall in gun deaths and an increase in violent crime. The second pattern showed gun bans being overall ineffective, decreasing neither gun deaths or violence. Test policies that imposed harsh punishments on criminals illegally carrying guns showed decreases in gun violence.
